Using an extension cord with a pressure washer? One of the most common problems/questions we have with electric pressure washers relates to the power supply and extension leads
Here are the key points on the consequences of using an extension cord:
- Using an extension cord can drastically shorten the life of the machine. The extension cord may not be able to provide enough power, causing the motor to not start or run properly. This will cause long term damage and very costly repair bills.
- Using the wrong type of extension cord can be extremely dangerous. Extension cords that are not rated for outdoor use or have the wrong gauge wire can lead to electric shocks, fires, and other serious accidents.
- Darren from PWS recommends never using an extension cord, if possible. If an extension cord must be used, it should be a heavy-duty cord rated for outdoor use, and the connection should be kept out of any standing water.
- Extension cords that are too long or the wrong gauge can cause voltage drops, leading to poor performance or even damage to the pressure washer.
- Manufacturers often recommend against using any extension cord at all with their pressure washers. If an extension cord must be used, they provide specific guidance on the maximum length and required wire gauge.
Using an extension cord with a pressure washer? The safest option:
Avoid using an extension cord and position the pressure washer as close as possible to a properly grounded, protected outlet. Using the wrong extension cord can be extremely hazardous and is not worth the risk. We have a range of high pressure hoses so you can leave your machine by the socket outlet and still reach where you need to clean, this is by far the safest option.

Hello, I am thinking of buying a 2400 kw high bar pressure washer which I will need to run on an extension lead. If I use a heavy duty gauge extension cord will it be ok. The washer comes with a uk 13 amp plug and will be run off a single guage domestic power source. Would replacing the plugs with 16 amp ones make any difference?
